Debbie A. Covert

Debbie sees counseling a lot like the art of pottery. She has sat with many people who feel like a spoiled lump of clay. But the beauty of both pottery and counseling is that nothing and no one is too far gone. Together, she will co-labor with you to help you better understand your story and give it a resilient ending.

Debbie works from the theoretical frameworks of Attachment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). When working with kids, she especially loves to use play and sand tray therapy. She will strive to personalize your treatment to what is best for you.

Debbie is open to working with people from all spiritual and cultural backgrounds. She believes in treating the whole person, spirit, soul, mind, and body. As a Christian, she can offer spiritual integration in sessions upon client request.

Before being a counselor, Debbie received her undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. She then worked in Madrid, Spain for three years with immigrants and refugees. Later, she worked in Fairfax County Public Schools with English Language Learners and special needs elementary school students. All of these experiences have increased her sensitivity to clients from diverse backgrounds. Because of her work overseas, Debbie has a passion for serving those who have crossed cultural borders, such as missionaries, Third Culture Kids, ex-pats, immigrants, or refugees. She also has clinical experience working with trauma, burnout, loss, depression, anxiety, family-of-origin issues, and anger. She is open to all age demographics.

Debbie has an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regent University. She is a Licensed Resident in Counseling, License # 0704016340 which renews on the 09/30 of every year. She is actively pursuing a License in Professional Counseling (LPC) in the Commonwealth of Virginia and works under the supervision of Marianne G. Shirilla, MAMFC, LMFT, LPC-S.

In her free time, you might find Debbie watercoloring, hiking or biking with her husband, reading, or dancing. She loves spending time with her friends, family, and church community.
