Yuko C. Constas

Life can be full of challenges. Perhaps you are feeling stuck or hopeless in your marriage or relationship. Maybe, you are feeling lonely after the loss of a loved one or job. When you need help and direction most during life’s trials, I want to be your support, guide and empower you to work through life’s challenges. I believe that anyone can excel with sufficient guidance. I also help you recognize and discover personal strengths and abilities to boost confidence and ultimately overcome obstacles.

Yuko believes that relationships are the most significant part of life and has a passion for helping couples, families, and individuals, including children. Yuko uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy, and she is also working towards becoming a certified Emotionally-Focused Therapist. Emotionally-Focused Therapy is proven to be effective in helping couples reduce relational conflicts, communicate their feelings efficiently, and build trust and connections with their loved ones. Yuko also uses Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based treatment designed to help clients process and resolve trauma. Yuko is also a certified Prepare-Enrich therapist. The Prepare-Enrich program is a premarital and marriage assessment tool, using evidence-based skills and insights to foster healthy relationships.

Yuko is sensitive to a diverse set of cultural issues as she grew up in Japan and is fluent in both Japanese and English. She understands the difficulty some people experience during their transition into a new lifestyle or culture. She is also aware of the unique challenges that interracial couples experience as she is part of an interracial marriage herself.

Before entering the counseling field, Yuko worked as a journalist covering social, political, and economic issues and gained interpersonal skills by interviewing a variety of people in her community. Her desire to help people led her to the developing countries, where she lived and served the poor and needy. In her 40s, she began pursuing her long-time dream of becoming a marriage and family therapist.

Yuko has a MS in Marriage and Family Therapy and is a Licensed Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy in the Commonwealth of Virginia, license #0730000631 which renews on 11/30 every year. She is working under the supervision of Marianne G. Shirilla, MAMFC, LMFT, LPC-S. Yuko’s specialties and areas of concentration are couples’ issues, family conflict, life transitions, self-esteem, career development, codependency, grief, emotional healing, spiritual issues, and more. While Yuko holds a Christian worldview, she respects the full array of religious and spiritual backgrounds and is open to forming a therapeutic relationship with any client. Currently, Yuko offers therapy to adolescents, young adults, women, men, families, and couples.
